The Impact

Jona Burton,

Class Facilitator

"Building genuine relationships is not a simple assignment! Students deepened their empathy and listening skills while elders generously shared rich stories."

Kendra Flores Gonzalez,

2026 Legacy Builder and Preserver

"As a Legacy Builder, I came to understand that active listening and communication are among the most important things to build upon when it comes to sharing stories and building comfortability with each other."

Dale DeMaio,

Participating Elder

“I didn't think I would have an impact on any one individual. It is emotional and exciting because you don't always think that you have that ability to really make an impact."

“On a day-to-day basis, teenagers like myself don't typically interact with an elder community. Both we and the elders tend to carry stereotypical perceptions of one another, not taking the time to see past those labels. But once those labels are pushed aside, you're exposed to wisdom and experience that can change the way you view life. It builds the skills of awareness, allowing all of those stereotypes to be proven wrong in such a beautiful way. Once you become aware, you see your own identity flourish — each conversation brings out qualities you hadn't previously exercised. It truly leaves an impression, one that stays with you for life."

“Entering the room on Thursdays, I feel the joyful energy surrounding the space. As I sit down at the table with Ms. Absolam, hearing her speak about her life and giving us advice makes me reflect deeply on my own life and value the gift of living. "Grow. Spread your wings," she says, sparkles and stories in her eyes, moving her hands as she speaks. Watching her, you can tell she truly means it — and it has helped me grow as a person. I started getting comfortable around her and the others. Leaving, the seed grows into a flower and the story takes root. Talking with my peers and fellow students has helped me build up my communication skills and speak with more confidence. I also built up the skill of interviewing others, which was something I never expected when I first stepped into this class. I didn't imagine myself interviewing anyone — and now I'm glad I was chosen, because I have the courage to do it.”

Life Long Learning

Ms. Lois holds up two fingers as bunny ears behind Tate's head.
"What I learned from every Thursday is stories and advice are a never-ending cycle. Allow certain stories into your lives, learn from our elders and those around you, and eventually we will share our stories to the upcoming generations."

Tate Garcia Ramos,

2026 Legacy Builder and Preserver

Virginia Aquino,

2026 Legacy Builder and Preserver

“I learned that vulnerability is beautiful and that it can be an opportunity to strengthen our relationships."

Allen Gaztambide,

2026 Legacy Builder and Preserver

"Overall, this experience has made me value the connection between my generation and the older generation more than before."

Alina Bonilla,

2026 Legacy Builder and Preserver

“I want people to know that everyone should be given a chance, and to take the risk of being vulnerable with others.”
